I like them to be on the
floor by the time they are two weeks old. When, I put 20 youngsters on the
floor, all the parents feed them at the same time. The good thing about
this is, every one of the young think they have 19 nest mates! Nest mates
always seem to stick together better then non-nest mates? And, with
rollers this is a good thing. By the time they are 4 weeks old, they will
be like peas in a pod. Sticking together like nest mates! They should by
this time, have been picking up feed, and learning how to eat. They are so
close, they learn from each other. When they are four weeks old, I move
them too the nursery kit. This is a small kit box that I use for weaning
them to eat, and drink. I, give them striate peas in the feeder, all they
want. At night I take the feed away from them. When, they are eating well,
and drinking, I skip a day, (No Food) The next day, I shake the feed can,
and put a small hand full of feed in the feeder. They should go crazy, and
start eating. I keep giving them small hands full, and always shaking the
can. I don't give them all they want, because I want them to stay hungry!
The next day, I do the same thing. After a few days of this, they will
know what the can means, and will think it's time to eat! You, can now
start setting them out side on top of the box. I let them sit out for
about one hour. I then, start shaking the can. They should be trying to
get back in the kit box to eat. But, sometimes you have to help them in.
Only two, or three times, and then they know how to get in on there own?
Always keeping them hungry, you will be in control. After, a few days of
going in good, at your command, they will start taking off, fluttering
around testing their wings! After, they go up, and down a few times, I
will use the flag on them to keep them up! But when they want to land, I
let them. I then, skip another day (No Food) and I don't let them out
either! The next day, they will come out real fast, and should start
flying on their own? With the help of the flag, they should start flying
for about ten min. You, are then on your way to flying a kit. By this
time, I have been feeding them wheat, and Milo. Once they are flying well
for about 20, or 30 min. I put them back on peas. I use the Milo off, and
on when I think they need energy.
